ELCA’s Diamond District Tour IS ONE OF 100+ UNIQUE AND FREE EVENTS during this two-weekend extravaganza. The ELCA tour will be from 1-5:00 pm, Sunday, September 18th, in Lynn’s Diamond District. East Lynn Community Association is one of many organizations in Essex County participating in the 10th annual TRAILS & SAILS: Two Weekends of Walks & Water, September 16-18 & 23-25, 2011. Now celebrating 10 years, TRAILS & SAILS will offer a passport to over 100+ FREE, FUN and FAMILY-FRIENDLY events at various sites that showcase our distinctive regional heritage. All events are designed to give residents and visitors a taste of the region’s distinctive history, breathtaking landscapes and hidden gems. Over 4,000 attendees are expected at this year’s TRAILS & SAILS. In addition to ELCA’s Diamond District Tour, events will include history and art walks; boat rides and paddles; farm tours, trail walks and rigorous hikes; behind the scenes tours; book readings and musical performances; vintage baseball games and a host of authentic activities. Most events will accommodate between twelve and fifty participants on a first-come, first-served basis with the exception of few reservation required events (see www.trailsandsails.org). The public is invited and all events are FREE.
The Diamond District Tour will begin at the Christian Science Church diagonal toRedRockPark(153 Lynn Shore Drive), and will feature an organ concert beginning at 1:00 p.m. The church will be open for the entire tour period. It was atRedRockParkthat Mary Baker Eddy spent many days recuperating and studying the bible, following a fall onMarket StreetinLynnin 1866 causing spinal injuries. She turned to the Bible which she claimed helped heal her injury, leading to a self published textbook of the Christian Science religion, which she wrote in her12 Broad Streethome.
Fliers with directions to the homes that will be open can be picked up at the church. You can also enjoy walking along the boardwalk of the “magnificent mile” and other streets of the District, kick up the sand on the beach, or have a picnic in the park.
TRAILS & SAILS: Two Weekends of Walks & Water is an annual celebration of all the historic, cultural and natural treasures in the Essex National Heritage Area. Organized by the Essex National Heritage Commission, this event is an integral part of the Essex Heritage mission, which is to raise regional awareness of the Area’s unique treasures and promote their preservation. This year, celebrate the 10th anniversary with the TRAILS & SAILS “passport” found in the printed guide or downloadable from the TRAILS & SAILS website to use as you travel to events over the two TRAILS & SAILS weekends. Participants with a passport validated at 10 sites can enter to win a REI suitcase, backpack or fanny pack full of heritage goodies, a TD Bank beach basket or an Eastern Bank picnic basket.
