United Way and Lynn Community Association are inviting Lynn residents and business owners to a “Conversation” as part of the Community by Community: Lynn initiative. Following a successful forum last November, during which United Way highlighted the results of a survey of nearly 2,000 Lynn youth, United Way’s Community by Community: Lynn initiative is bringing Lynners to the table in focus to spark ideas, gather input and create a vision for the community’s future. The upcoming conversation will be held April 17th from 7-9 pm at the Lynn Housing Authority Community Room, 10 Church Street in Lynn. The United Way will provide dinner for participants and will facilitate the forum.

LCA hosted a forum March 19th on “Lynn Youth: One Voice, One Community,” in which four community organizations (Girls, Inc., KAYA, Lynn Youth Street Outreach Advocacy (LYSOA), and Raw Art Works)—who focus on youth–demonstrated the activities in which each seeks to engage Lynn youth, providing a basis for this follow-up conversation. “When the ‘village’ gets involved in solving problems, solutions begin to develop,” says Mary Trahan, President of the LCA. “We hope that everyone in Lynn can make time to ponder our youth’s future—it’s that important. Whether we’re in city administration, business, young parents, grandparents, or even without children, fundamentally we all are responsible for the future of our youth.” The mission of LCA is to promote pride and ownership in the Lynn community through beautification, education, recreation, and neighborly relationships.

This community conversation will amplify the voices of our community by bringing together businesses, political leaders, parents, schools and youth to pinpoint concerns, spark ideas, gather input and create a vision for Lynn’s future. “United Way and Lynn have a shared history of producing substantial change for families,” said Michael Durkin, president and CEO of United Way. “Through the work of United Way and our partner agencies, we have a direct effect on nearly half of Lynn’s residents who consistently share their deep sense of civic pride and vision for a better future. By engaging specific focus groups, our aim is to uncover common themes that the community and United Way can use to help Lynn fulfill the vision of its community.”

You can follow the Lynn Community Association on Facebook . The United Way’s programs, including more detailed information on their 2011 youth survey, are highlighted at their website, www.supportunitedway.org/lynn.

“We hear so many stories about our youth getting into trouble. We simply have to make a greater effort to put our youth more in the way of productive activities, which will benefit everyone, “ says Mary Trahan, President of the Association. “No one wants their child to have problems in society, and parents sometimes need a helping hand, regardless of their socioeconomic status or culture; everyone wants to feel valued and recognized in his/her community.”
