Here We Grow Again!

The East Lynn Community Association (ELCA) has officially become the Lynn Community Association, Inc. (LCA).

People from all over Lynn came together to put new playground equipment at Kiley Park

According to the association’s President, Mary Trahan, the organization is dedicated to making Lynn a more beautiful and safe place to live and welcomes all residents to become active participants in the life and well-being of our city and the LCA.  “Our mission remains unchanged, which is to promote pride and ownership in the Lynn community through beautification, education, recreation, and neighborly relationships,” says Trahan, “We simply want to ensure that everyone in Lynn feels welcome in our Association.” The association continues to welcome anyone, anywhere, who is interested in improving the quality of life in Lynn, as members.

In 2009, the organization quickly evolved from a group of neighbors who first considered forming a garden club. The group believed that Lynn is a great place to live, has a tremendous inventory of natural resources and beautiful architecture, along with wonderful people who seem to know nothing about one another. As the small group talked, they realized that their interests lie much farther than the boundaries of their own homes and neighborhood. From this conversation about a garden club the East Lynn Community Association blossomed, and was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in February 2010.

The newly founded group wanted Lynn to be a desirable place for young families to raise their children where the streets are neat, clean, and free of litter; trees and flowers flourish; the parks are fun and safe for children; and the citizens are proud to walk our sidewalks. They aspired to having better public schools, cleaner beaches, and a community that is informed. The organization endeavored to create neighborhoods where people know and care about one another.

The ELCA also started two sub-groups in 2009 – a book club and an eating out club (which visits a different Lynn restaurant monthly) – to make it easy and fun for individuals to gather in small groups and become friends. Both groups continue to meet regularly.

Some of the ELCA’s activities during the last three years include hosting candidate forums for mayoral and at-large councilors, the Clean Sweep to the Sea, numerous cleanup and planting projects in city parks, programs on youth violence and gangs, gardening, recycling, pet ownership, a “State of the City” address with Mayor Kennedy, three community resource fairs, co-sponsoring the 2011 Jobs for Teens resume prep workshop, decorating numerous city intersections with wreaths for the holidays, sponsoring a Lynn event in the Essex Heritage’s Trails and Sails Event, helping with erecting a new playset at Kiley park, and most recently, spearheading collaboration with Centerboard, Communities that Care’s Fun and Fitness Alliance, Girls, Inc., and The Food Project, for a 2012 MLK Service Day collecting school supplies, food, and clothing for those in need, as well as providing volunteer labor at the Lynn Shelter and YMCA for cleanup projects.

LCA’s current board of directors are Mary Trahan (President); Jesse Jaeger (Vice President); Eliana Runyon (Treasurer); Kerry Quintiliani (Secretary); and Directors Bob Connolly, Tyron Hawkins, Douglas Maitland, Duncan Maitland, and Joy Winkler.

46 Turn out for inaugural Lynn MLK Day of Service

46 Lynn residents turned out January 16th to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by serving the community. The event was co-sponsored by the East Lynn Community Association, Girls Inc., Centerboard, SCI Lynn, Communities That Care and the Lynn Food and Fitness Alliance.

Participants, including groups from Project Cope, Cub Scout Pack 121 from Troop 121 at St. Mary’s in Lynn and the NAACP, volunteered on projects at the YMCA and the Lynn Shelter Association in addition to collecting food, school supplies and winter wear at local businesses.

“We would really like to thank Lynn City Hall, Shaw’s Supermarket, Walgreens and Compare Supermarket for hosting our food, school supplies and winter wear collection locations,” said organizer Jesse Jaeger of the East Lynn Community Association. “We would especially like to thank Compare Supermarket for matching items donated by their customers.” In total approximately $1000 worth of food, school supplies and winter wear were collected that were donated to the Lynn Shelter Association, My Brother’s Table, the Lynn Public Schools and the Lynn Food and Fitness Alliance.

Organizers said that they hope that this is the first of many future MLK Days of Service in Lynn. “There was a tremendous response from the community to volunteer,” said Briana Iacovetta, SCI Lynn Americorp Member who coordinated volunteers for the event. “More people expressed interest then we could accommodate so hopefully next year we will find even more service opportunities for people to participate in.”

If Lynn community members or agencies have an idea for a service project for next year’s Lynn MLK Day of Service they can contact the East Lynn Community Association at 781-346-9060.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Day with Service

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day to serve their neighbors and communities. Lynn organizations and residents will be doing just that.

Lynn businesses including Shaws, Compare Supermarket and others will be hosting the donation drive. Volunteers will be at these locations telling customers about the donation drive and handing them a list of needed items if they wish to purchase and donate. Donations of new outerwear (coats, mittens, scarves, and hats), specific food items, and school supply donations can be made at the above mentioned locations on Monday January 16th from 12-6 and at Lynn City Hall starting Wednesday January 11th through Friday January 13th.

Donations will be sorted and delivered to Lynn Public Schools, Centerboard, the Lynn Shelter Association, and My Brothers Table. We hope the Lynn community will embrace this day of service by coming out to these locations to make donations! There is no admission charge and everyone–of any age or area of Lynn–is welcome.

Organizations’ tables for displays will be on the ground floor in the gymnasium. ELCA will be offering voter registration, association information, and a raffle. Ingalls PTO is having a bake sale with yummy home-made goods. Once again, there will be an ice cream social with super Sundae’s put on by Treadwell’s. Free parking is available in the Ingalls lot behind the school.

We are especially pleased that the Lynn Health Department will be on hand to offer free flu vaccinations and blood pressure checks for anyone seeking these services. Many other vital organizations have signed on to participate as well, and we anticipate that this will be our most exciting fair to date.

Do you want to save your stamp and a trip to the post office? We’ll have Item Santa donation canisters so you can just drop your donation in, helping to make the holidays brighter for our children who otherwise would not have an exciting holiday. The need is especially great this year!

ELCA to Host Forum for School Committee Candidates

ELCA Counselor At-Large Debate

The East Lynn Community Association will host a forum for city school committee candidates on Wednesday, September 14, at the Congregation Ahabat Sholom,151 Ocean StreetinLynn, 7:00 p.m.

“Citizen involvement in this election for School Committee members is crucial for the development of the city because having performing schools is the key for keeping students in school, attracting new middle income families to Lynn, and also having new businesses locate here. That should be a no-brainer,” said Association President Mary Trahan. “Voters need to be informed and vote for candidates who are most likely to be progressive. Sitting on the sidelines is no longer a viable option for our voters.”

The ECLA invited the following candidates for the school committee forum: incumbents Patricia Capano, Maria Carassco, Donna Coppolla, John Ford, Jr., Rick Starbard, and Vincent Spirito; challengers Dolores DiFillipo and Charlie Gallo.

The event is open to everyone and there is no charge. Voters who want to submit questions for the debate should email east.lynn.assn@comcast.net or call 781-364-9060. Questions will be pre-selected from submissions and kept confidential until presented by the moderator, and will remain anonymous.

Anyone eligible to vote but who is not yet registered can do so at this meeting. Although the deadline for voter registration is August 31st to vote in the September 20th primary election, the registration deadline is Wednesday, October 12th for the general election on November 8th.

The mission of ELCA is to promote pride and ownership in theLynncommunity through beautification, education, recreation, and neighborly relationships.
